I was in the gym yesterday morning and a coach was having his client do a controlled bear crawl. He was cuing her on the simultaneous placement of her opposite hand and foot, her hips and so forth. With a cup of coffee in hand, I observed and smiled as I was reminded of one of my favorite and inspiring clips from the movie, Facing the Giants, featuring the death crawl and giving your best, your very best.
Check out what Brock was able to achieve when dug deep and pushed beyond his self-perceived limits:
“Most of the shadows of this life are caused by our own standing in our own sunshine.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Many of us place limitations on ourselves somewhere in our life. It could show up in something as small as adding the next increment to your deadlift to a leap of faith in your career or your ability to let love in. Whether we’re aware or not, our mindset has been conditioned by something, somewhere to place these limits on ourselves and probably as a result of fear, a lack of belief, or a mistrust. Breaking through these patterns takes awareness and a repetitive effort to think and act in a deliberate direction.
Something else to remember…
There’s a great book titled, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. The fourth agreement is “Always Do Your Best” and Ruiz explains, “Keep in mind your best is never going to be the same from one moment to the next. Everything is alive and changing all the time, so your best will sometimes be high quality, and other times it will not be as good…Your best will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstances, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.”
An important reminder, not to create excuses for your efforts or lack there of, but to find a peace and confidence in your actions. Trust yourself. Trust the greatness you possess and your ability to go beyond the mental limitations you may place on yourself. Give your best and acknowledge that each moment, and therefore each effort, might look different. Be grateful for that moment and keep on, keepin’ on.
“The best way to pay for a lovely moment, is to enjoy it” – Richard Bach
Not every moment is lovely, but there is something lovely in every moment.
Live up to your greatness by giving your very best.
